Please may we ask how to deal with the emotions surrounding looking after a person with dementia?
DK
It is extremely hard being a carer of someone with dementia. The most important thing you have to keep in mind, is that during the outbursts and situations that occur, this cruel disease isn’t them. That person is not there mentally anymore. You almost have to stand back and see them as acting in a play – they are merely playing a part.Never argue with them, it’s pointless! Better to leave the room and then come back later, when it may be possible to get through to them.
They won’t recognise tears or frustration as being anything to do with them. With a delicate situation, it may be best to get someone else to sort things out, rather than a close family member. Take a break if you can otherwise, as a carer, you will get overwhelmed with the situation.
Always remember to keep very calm.
